Lyndale Primary School's History

Lyndale PS was first built in1956 to cater for a growing number of young families in the Lyndale area. At that time Dandenong was a mixture of the country and the city, being surrounded by farmland and indigenous bushland areas. In the 1950s and 60s many new industries became established in Dandenong and areas of housing were provided in the new suburbs of Lyndale and Doveton to cater for the many people moving into the area at that time. Many of the people coming to the Dandenong area were European migrants and over the years various waves of different migrant groups have arrived in Dandenong, giving this area a dynamic, multicultural profile.

Lyndale PS grew rapidly over the years and at the height of its growth had a population of approximately 1000 students. It was quite a crowded place just prior to new schools being built in the surrounding areas and around half of the school population then moving to these new schools. Lyndale PS was not the only school in Dandenong experiencing this rapid population growth in 50s. Dandenong High also experienced a similar population boom resulting from the ‘Baby Boomers’ generation of children filling schools everywhere.

Over the years, Lyndale PS has undergone many changes to its physical structure with the latest addition being 3 new rooms, completed in 2005, providing the school with great new facilities. The Principal, Ruth Knight, has overseen the development of our school gardens and ongoing improvements to the structure and buildings.
